Catholic Schools Week: Remembering the Pioneers

Today, about 96% of teachers in Catholic schools are lay people.  But, for decades before the 1970's, the vast majority of teachers in our schools were men and women religious.  Due to the major decline in vocations, many of our students have never met a religious or know anything about them.  So, during Catholic Schools Week, we thought we'd introduce our students to the work of women religious, whose selfless sacrifices made Catholic schools possible.

Sister Pauline Maurier, CSC (the sister of Mr. Maurier) showed a wonderful movie on the history of women religious in the United States to our juniors and seniors yesterday and today.  The students gathered during their Theology classes in Campus Ministry and watched the film and had a discussion with Sister Pauline.  Hopefully this was an opportunity for our students to learn something about the amazing work and impact of many thousands of women in our Church, especially in our schools.
