The great Dorothy Day never referred to her work as service but rather as works of mercy. She once said, "Our rule is the works of mercy. It is the way of sacrifice, worship, and a sense of reverence."
We've always used the word service and included it as one of the three pillars of Campus Ministry. But we decided, in a sense, to "rebrand" our service work and refer to it as mercy. Anyone can do service and many public schools admirably require their students to perform service hours. We certainly do service too but as a Catholic school, we felt it was important to put that service within the context of our faith and the works of mercy. We do mercy to transform ourselves and the people we serve into the way of Christ. Thus, we will now refer to service as mercy and service opportunities as mercy opportunities or mercy experiences.
Dorothy Day, pray for us!
