Human dignity

Father John Bucchino, OFM
Yesterday we gathered as a school community for our annual Mass of Peace and Justice.  We celebrate this Mass on Dr. Martin Luther King Day and around the March for Life to celebrate the worth and dinigty of human life.  Father John Bucchino, OFM, the pastor of Blessed Sacrament Parish in Manchester, was our celebrant.  In his homily he spoke of how he recently visited Dr. King's boyhood home in Georgia and was so moved by how humble it was.  It showed, Father John said, that anyone, even those who grow up in poverty, can do amazing things.

Father John went on to preach about Catholic social teaching and thanked Trinity's students for their commitment to that teaching, through their service and by taking part in the March for Life.  Following Communion Father John gave a special blessing for all those going on the march later this week.

Sr. Angie Whidden, RSM
Charlie Sherman, the Executive Director of New Horizons, was going to speak about their work and their founder, the late Sr. Angie Whidden, RSM but he was out of town and his flight was delayed getting back to Manchester.  Sr. Angie was called the Mother Teresa of Manchester as she committed herself to fighting poverty and to empowering people through education (she taught for a few years at Trinity).  She passed away this October after 68 years of religious life!  I said a few words about New Horizons and the work Trinity students do there.  I also showed the students a sketch of Sr. Angie that was done by a homeless man about 10 years ago.  I framed it and will hang it in the school as a reminder to the students about the power one person has.
